Digital Radiography

X-rays are a valuable diagnostic tool.  We have improved our capability with digital radiography.  We are able to take better radiographs and with manipulations further improve their detail for better diagnostic value. We are also able to enlarge the images for an even better look at areas of interest.  Another advantage is that we can transmit the images via email to specialists so they can give us evaluations of cases without the hassle of mailing radiographs as we used to do in the past.

Pet Bird Medicine

Comprehensive Physical Examinations

Birds hide their illnesses so it can be difficult to determine when a bird is sick, until it is too late. That is why regular physical examinations are so very important for pet birds. In addition to a "hands on" exam, laboratory work is essential to evaluate their state of health, including a complete blood count, fecal exam and other tests deemed necessary. We pride ourselves on our thorough avian physical examinations as well as our in-house laboratory that can generate results within minutes.

 Diagnostic / Laboratory Testing

Because birds do not always display signs of disease, laboratory testing is of utmost importance in evaluating their health. We pride ourselves on our in-house laboratory and the ability to generate lab results rapidly. In critically ill birds, it can be life-saving to have results quickly and generate the diagnosis without waiting for results on lab work that was sent out. However, there are certain tests that do require the use of an outside laboratory.

Blood Sexing/Surgical Sexing

Most pet birds are not sexually dimorphic(different appearance of males and females) so that the only way gender can be determined is through either surgical sexing or blood sexing.  Surgical sexing is an actual surgical procedure involving anesthesia and was used extensively in the past.  However, with the advent of the accurate, non-invasive blood sexing technique (DNA from a drop of blood is used to determine gender) this has become the preferred technique.

Grooming

We perform grooming services for pet birds, including beak trimming, beak malocclusion trimming, pedicures and wing clipping.  We recommend that birds be up to date with yearly physicals before such procedures are performed as birds hide disease and quite often beak/nail overgrowth may be a sign of underlying disease.
